For right now, a sewing machine and a whole bunch of simplicity and vogue patterns. This is the basic knowledge you need. Cutting and sewing pre-made patterns is the equivalent to learning to play "twinkle twinkle little star " on the piano. After you learn how to play other composer's music, then you're ready to start making your own compositions. At first, you'll have a hard time understanding the directions of the patterns, but after one or two patterns it will seem pretty standard. I think you'll actually be pretty surprised how simple a shift dress is to sew. Certain things that you'll want to focus on though is zippers, buttons, button holes, pleats, and darts. These are kind of all the basic building blocks you'll need for the future. Honestly, after following just five or ten dress patterns, you'll probably have a decent enough knowledge to start designing your own patterns. |
